Project Organization:

Toquaht Nation

Project Investment:

  • Island Coastal Economic Trust: $400,000
  • Toquaht Nation: $950,000
  • Total Budget: $1,350,000

Project Highlight:

By 2022, the total local spending impact by boaters and tourists attracted to the marina is estimated at $1.35 million.

The Toquaht Bay marina is located at a key access point to the Broken Group Islands. The marina serves as a catalyst for tourism that enables the Toquaht Nation to share their history and culture with visiting boaters. When environmental concerns required a closure of Toquaht Bay campground and marina, the Nation adapted plans for expansion of the existing marina to develop a new one at the Secret Beach campground.
This project constructed a 40-slip marina, double-wide boat launch, access road, parking lot and breakwater at Secret Beach. The marina will be the first phase of a new West Coast Indigenous tourism hub, which will eventually include a common building with a café and giftshop, rental cabins, a kayak comfort station and other tourism infrastructure.

Completed in June 2019, the marina will help meet growing demand from visitors to the region and create new opportunities for the Toquaht Nation in tourism and hospitality. Anticipated outcomes include new tourism product development, increased revenue to the Toquaht Nation, creation of short-term construction jobs, as well as 15 permanent jobs within 3-5 years. Future expansions plans will increase the capacity to serve up to 80 boats, with access to campgrounds and services for the increasing number of visitors to the area.
